If Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Is Too Much, Try These Three Stunning Anime Instead

But be prepared for mind-blowing shows!

Nearly two years after the release of the long-awaited game Cyberpunk 2077, its developer CD Projekt Red joined forces with Studio Trigger to create one of the most discussed anime series of 2022: Cyberpunk: Edgerunners!

The episodes launched on Netflix on September 13, and the story is about David Martinez, a 17-year-old boy from humble origins striving to survive in a greedy place known as Night City. After a series of disasters in his life, he meets Lucy, a hacker, and thief not much older than he is, and becomes an edgerunner, a mercenary.

The anime takes place in Night City in 2076, around one year before the events of the game. This information can be inferred from easter eggs, and secrets present both in the series and in the recent game update, which means that Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is canon to the game!

Studio Trigger has a history of successful productions, covering strong themes with great art and remarkable characters, such as KILL la KILL. However, because of the MA-rated content, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners may not be the best anime option for my younger or more sensitive otaku friends.

But don’t panic! I recommend three other equally amazing anime from Studio Trigger to unleash your rebellious side!

BNA: Brand New Animal

BNA, Anime: Michiru Kagemori in Anima City
BNA, Season 1, Episode 1 || Credits: BNA IMDb

If you’re into cool furry and anthropomorphic characters, a good show for you could be BNA (Brand New Animal). This anime is about Michiru Kagemori, an ordinary high school girl who suddenly turns into a raccoon-human hybrid and is hunted by other humans. The only way to escape is to go to Anima City, a safe place for other beastmen like her, and start over as a Tanuki girl. Reaching her new home was already challenging, but her new life won’t be any easier!

Promare

Promare, Movie: Galo

Turn on the fan because things are about to get hot! From the creators of Gurren Lagann and KILL la KILL, Promare is a movie that tells the story of Galo and Lio. Promare is an alien race trapped on Earth that can connect with some people and follow the wishes of their human hosts, the Burnish. On the other side, special groups form to keep these dangerous outcasts under control. Galo and Lio are from opposite sides but will have to work together to prevent a much greater disaster: the Earth being consumed by lava as a consequence of Promare activities.

DARLING in the FRANXX

Darling in the FranXX, Anime: Zero Two
Darling in the FranXX, Season 1, Episode 1 || Credits: DARLING in the FRANXX IMDb

My last recommendation is DARLING in the FRANXX. How could I leave aside the anime that granted us one of the best waifus from 2018? Zero Two is so gorgeous! In DARLING in the FRANXX, humanity is secluded in mobile fort cities, where adults can live happily and safe from giant creatures known as Klaxosaurs. On the other hand, children are kept isolated and receive intense training to fight against the monsters, which is done by piloting the FRANXX, mechas that need to be operated by a male-female pair. Hiro, Code 016, was one of these kids until he could not pilot. One day, Hiro meets a lonely female pilot said to be a “Partner Killer.”
