The epilogues are out y’all. Painter of the Night has officially ended!
I still can't believe it ended on the last day of May. It feels like just yesterday we started this wild journey with Seungho and Nakyum, and now it's come to an end. My heart can't take it!
But seriously, can we talk about how this manhwa has taken the yaoi fandom by storm? It's like a freaking hurricane of emotions, drama, and steamy scenes!
If you haven't read it yet... well, first of all, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?! And second of all, you better get on that ASAP!
But before you dive in, a little heads-up: this manhwa is not for the faint of heart. It's got some seriously dark and intense themes, including dub-con (dubious consent) and abusive relationships. If that's not your cup of tea, maybe this one isn't for you.
But if you're ready to have your heart ripped out, stomped on, and then put back together again (in the best way possible), then buckle up, buttercup, because Painter of the Night is about to take you on one wild ride!
Painter of The Night Summary
Can you believe it's been FIVE YEARS since Painter of the Night dropped on Lezhin? And let me tell you, it was worth the wait!
Sometimes, it even feels like it's almost romanticizing unhealthy relationship dynamics! It’s a super fine line, honestly.
But you know what? There was always this undeniable spark between them through all the angst and drama. It's a slow burn, and it takes a lot of pain and growth for them to get there, but eventually, they find their way to a love that's as passionate as it is tender.
First Impressions
Baek Nakyum, our precious cinnamon roll, was orphaned and raised in a kisaeng, which is basically ancient Korea's version of a brothel!
And this precious little cinnamon roll has a job that could literally get him executed: he paints homoerotic art.
Enter Yoon Seungho, the wealthy noble who's obsessed with Baek Nakyum's secret sketches. He pulls this poor artist out of the gutter and into the palace, where Nakyum is forced to watch Seungho in the act!
Seungho is the epitome of a spoiled rich brat. This guy is swimming in privilege and power, and he knows it. He's got zero patience and a libido for men that knows no bounds.
And when he doesn't get his way? Cue the red flags because Seungho's got a violent streak that would give the most hardened fangirl the ick.
He's like Sangwoo from Killing Stalking in a way. But where Sangwoo is all creepy and calculated, Seungho's just straight-up brazen.
He doesn't bother hiding his dark side because why should he? He's a nobleman, and who's gonna stop him?
Discussing this relationship without mentioning the biggest thing that will keep some away would be impossible. This manhwa contains a lot of non-con, dubious consent, and outright abuse.
We all know this manhwa isn't your typical fluffy romance. It's dark, twisty, and pushes some boundaries.
Some moments made me scream at my screen, and at times, I just wanted to hug both characters and tell them to get therapy.
That said, I feel that this manhwa's mature elements were handled very well and not romanticized at all!
There are some dark and heavy themes covered in this series, so I would not recommend it to younger BL fans. No matter how pretty the artwork is, it is 18+ for a reason.
Painter of the Night Finale
Painter of the Night has given us four seasons of pure bliss, and now it's time to say farewell.
The chapters leading up to 129 had me clutching my chest, fearing the worst. Everyone was practically screaming that this chapter would shatter our hearts into a million pieces!
If you want to avoid spoilers, you better stop here. Otherwise, carry on, my friend!
Chapter 129 Spoilers
NaKyum was determined to see Seungho again, so he worked very hard and made paintings in neighboring villages to earn money to go to the capital.
Back in the village, exciting things were happening! A smart young man had become the new mayor. One day, NaKyum bumped into a man selling paintings. The man said the new mayor loved NaKyum's art and wanted a portrait!
NaKyum, feeling a little nervous but hopeful, went to the mayor's house the next day. A servant led him to a beautiful courtyard filled with peach blossoms. NaKyum paused to admire the sweet-smelling flowers, their pink petals falling softly around him.
It occurred to the servant to wonder about the mayor's taste. According to the mayor, the blossoms reminded him of his beloved.
Nakyum’s name was called, and he entered a big room. The mayor sat behind a curtain, his face hidden.
The painter almost spoke his name but then looked down and saw a familiar painting. He had painted it years ago when he was kidnapped by a man who wanted to hurt Seungho.
The mayor asked if he was Baek NaKyum and said he liked his paintings. The painter looked up as the mayor lifted the curtain, revealing his face.
They looked at each other in the same room, and a window behind them showed leaves falling from the trees.
It was Seungho!
He says, “Why do you just stare at me? Come and hold me, have you already forgotten my face?”
Seungho stretches out his arms while NaKyum's eyes fill with tears. He runs to embrace his lover, and both characters melt in that deep embrace.
Painter of the Night gave us the sweetest ending we could ever hope for!
Seeing Seungho and NaKyum overcome their trials and find happiness together was everything. Their journey from that toxic, angst-ridden relationship to pure, wholesome love was a rollercoaster, but it was so worth it!
Not only did we get the ending we deserved, but we also got hot and steamy epilogues! Overall, It was a good run, and Painter of the Night ended beautifully.
