"While hazards may be natural and inevitable, disasters are not." - IFRC
Not everything is fun and pretty in the world.
Mother Nature works in such ways that some events are inevitable, and being prepared for them can save you time, money, or even your life! 😳
This is the case of landslides, floods, hurricanes, and, of course, earthquakes!
Only a few animes cover this because it can be a delicate subject for creators and audiences. Still, there are great titles anime fans must watch!
That’s why in this post, I prepared a short list of anime disasters for you to think if and how you would go through them!
Being separated from your family during an Earthquake
Japanese kids are taught to be independent at an early age, and in Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 (2009), Mirai Onozawa is only a middle school student when she and her younger brother, Yuuki, face a terrifying quake.
The siblings visit a robot exhibition far from home when a magnitude 8.0 earthquake strikes, and the building collapses!
Luckily, a gentlewoman, Mari Kusakabe, helps them return to their family.
The challenges of being forced to leave your own country
If one hazard is not enough, in A Spirit of the Sun (2006), Japan is devastated by a series of earthquakes, tsunamis, AND Mount Fuji erupting!
The country ends up split into two, and many Japanese flee to different countries as refugees.
Genichirou Ryu is a Japanese boy adopted and raised in Taiwan. By age 15, he gets involved in conflicts between citizens and refugees.
Getting lost in the middle of nowhere!
This happened to a group of girls in Are you lost? (2019). What should be just a high-school trip becomes a disaster when the plane crashes, and they end up on a deserted island!
Fortunately for the group, one of them, Homare Onishima, has some experience with that situation. She used to travel with her survivalist father as he adventured worldwide.
With Homare's guidance, the girls learn to eat cicadas or build traps and realize that being stranded may not be so bad.
Losing the Battle Against Nature
Yomigaeru Sora: Rescue Wings (2006) is a realistic anime about a rescue pilot and his missions.
At first, Kazuhiro Uchida is upset because he dreams of being a fighter pilot. Still, instead, he becomes part of the rescue force.
As Kazuhiro takes part in different missions, he starts to accept his position, but the problem is, not every rescue mission has a happy ending.
Are you ready?
As we know, Japan is often under the influence of earthquakes, and the best Japanese people can do learn how to deal with them.
What is it like in your country? Do you know what to do in case of an emergency?
We don't quite understand some situations until we have been through them, but proper training and information sure help!
So if you feel like visiting Japan or any other area that can be subject to natural disasters, try to learn as much as possible about it and, most importantly… Stay safe!
