From time to time, new animes about Yakuza are released, such as the well-known titles Durarara!, Nisekoi, and Black Lagoon. Even though these animes focus on a similar subject, the approach and the plot of yakuza animes vary greatly.
No matter the subject, it’s impressive to see bad guys in action, and that’s why we’re talking about The Way Of The Househusband (Gokushufudou) and The Yakuza's Guide to Babysitting (Kumichou Musume to Sewagakari) today.
The Way Of The Househusband started as a manga series created by Kousuke Oono. The chapters show Tatsu, a once-feared yakuza boss who gave up organized crime and now goes about his day as a househusband, living a rather ordinary life. As much as Tatsu’s mafia days are gone, his past never seems to give him a break, either in his exaggerated actions or in his sudden encounters with other yakuza members. The anime adaptation was released in 2021 and has ten chapters so far, with each chapter consisting of six events that make you go from “What?” to “Why?!” to “LOL” in the blink of an eye. The simple animation style, resembling a motion comic, makes the anime even funnier.
The Yakuza's Guide to Babysitting is a series created by Tsukiya in which a vicious yakuza member is designated to babysit his boss’s 7-year-old daughter. Tooru Kirishima is a troublesome but loyal subordinate. After turning a business meeting into a crime scene, his boss orders Kirishima to take care of his young daughter.
Despite his lack of experience with kids, he can be very gentle and caring around the little girl, and they form the cutest bond! The anime adaptation was released in July 2022 and contains jokes, action, and wholesome scenes.
The Demon of Sakuragi and The Immortal Dragon
Because of his violent and unruly behavior, Kirishima (Yakuza's Guide to Babysitting) is known as "The Demon of Sakuragi." His position as the right-hand man of the Sakuragi Family is the perfect excuse to threaten and attack others. This is the complete opposite from the gentle and patient Kirishima who babysits Yaeka Sakuragi, his boss’s daughter. Yaeka is initially a lonely, quiet girl, but soon opens up to her babysitter as he spends his time with her, encouraging and cheering her up when needed.
Tatsu is equally fearful and skillful, but wiser. He was a yakuza boss until he suddenly disappeared and left organized crime. Since then, he has been focused on his duty as a full-time househusband while his wife Miku pursues her career as a designer. What could be an ordinary life of cooking and hanging around with old ladies becomes much funnier once Tatsu simply can’t let go of old habits and often scares people around him who are not used to his way of speaking and presenting himself.
The “this anime is better” talk doesn’t fit here. Both series are super fun to watch if you’re in the mood for an excellent comedy that includes some heart-melting moments!
Kitty Tax
Something else these two yakuza animes have in common are the cute cats! Gin is Tatsu and Miku’s cat, and Ohagi was rescued and adopted by the little Yaeka!
